Learn the essentials of working as a ScrumMaster or Scrum team member in this practical course. At the end of the class, you will be ready to plan your first Sprint and you will know a lot of useful things about how and why Scrum works.

The class contains many interactive exercises and small-group discussions.

The CSM course was formulated to train and certify ScrumMasters and is used worldwide for ScrumMaster training. While the Scrum Alliance provides a list of core concepts that must be covered in the class, each instructor creates his or her own material, allowing courses to differ based on the strengths, interests, and experiences of the instructor.

All CSM courses are taught by Certified Scrum Trainers. Taking a CSM course and the corresponding evaluation designates you as a Certified ScrumMaster, which indicates that you have been introduced to the basic concepts you need to perform as a ScrumMaster or team member on a Scrum team. This course also satisfies two elements of the CSD track: Scrum Introduction and Elective. Participants will receive Certified ScrumMaster designation from the Scrum Alliance upon completion of an on-line exam. Participants will also receive a one-year membership in the Scrum Alliance, where additional ScrumMaster-only material and information are available.

This course will be led by Joe Little.  Joe is an experienced Agile Coach and Scrum Trainer.  He co-teaches regularly with Jeff Sutherland and other great Scrum trainers.  He has a CSM, CSP, CST and an MBA.

Participants Will Learn:

  • Practical, project-proven practices
  • The essentials of getting a project off on the right foot
  • How to write user stories for the product backlog
  • Why there’s more to leading a self-organizing team than buying pizza and getting out of the way
  • How to help both new and experienced teams be more successful
  • How to successfully scale Scrum to large, multi-continent projects with team sizes in the hundreds
  • Tips and tricks from the instructors’ years of using Scrum in a wide variety of situations

In this course, we typically mix in XP and Lean ideas.  Having worked recently with Jeff Sutherland, we mix in many of his ideas and stories.  Having a business background and MBA, this course is perhaps somewhat more oriented toward Product Owners and business issues.

Who should attend:

The best results are obtained when everyone connected to a Scrum Team, including CEOs, COOs, CFOs, managers, stakeholders, the Scrum Master, Product Owner and Team members, participate to this course. It is common for whole Teams (and related stakeholders) to take the course all at one time.

If you just start to work as a Scrum Master and would like to understand your role, this is the best way to start.

If you’ve already been Scrum Master for a while, this class will help you improve the way you’re accomplishing your role.

If you have a long experience doing Scrum, be aware that the purpose of this class is to cover the basic principles and practices and the trainer has to talk about all the topics in the Scrum Alliance official syllabus, so you may need other services like personal coaching or an Advanced Scrum Class.

PMPs: You can receive 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) for this course.

Prerequisites

Participants should obtain (at their own expense) Agile Project Management with Scrum, by Ken Schwaber, which is required reading for the course. You may also wish to obtain the primary Scrum book, Agile Software Development with SCRUM by Schwaber and Beedle, on which the course is based.

Additional Information:

The course will run from 9am-5pm each day. You will need to arrive by 8:30am on the first day. Lunch and snacks during breaks will be provided during both days.

Course Material:

Participants will receive course materials (not books) at the course. There will be updated material and training exercises in the course which you cannot get from books. The entire syllabus will be made available upon registering for the course so you can look it over and bring it with you to the sessions.

Agenda:

  • Overview of Scrum
  • Product Backlog
  • Release Planning and Estimation
  • Role of the Product Owner
  • Role of the Scrum Master
  • Leading Self-Organizing Teams
  • Sprint Practices
  • Metrics and Reporting
